Thesis Abstract
Furnishing the Mind: Concepts and Their Perceptual Basis by Jesse J. Prinz, Western philosophy has long been divided between empiricists, who argue that human understanding has its basis in experience, and rationalists, who argue that reason is the source of knowledge. A central issue in the debate is the nature of concepts, the internal representations we use to think about the world. The traditional empiricist thesis that concepts are built up from sensory input has fallen out of favor. Mainstream cognitive science tends to echo the rationalist tradition, with its emphasis on innateness. In "Furnishing the Mind, Jesse Prinz attempts to swing the pendulum back toward empiricism.Prinz provides a critical survey of leading theories of concepts, including imagism, definitionism, prototype theory, exemplar theory, the theory theory, and informational atomism. He sets forth a new defense of concept empiricism that draws on philosophy, neuroscience, and psychology and introduces a new version of concept empiricism called proxytype theory. He also provides accounts of abstract concepts, intentionality, narrow content, and concept combination. In an extended discussion of innateness, he covers Noam Chomsky's arguments for the innateness of grammar, developmental psychologists' arguments for innate cognitive domains, and Jerry Fodor's argument for radical concept nativism.
On the Plurality of Worlds by David Lewis, This book is a defense of modal realism: the thesis that our world is but one of a plurality of worlds, and that the individuals that inhabit our world are only a few out of all the inhabitants of all the worlds. Lewis argues that the philosophical utility of modal realism is a good reason for believing that it is true. After outlining the type of modal realism he favors, he answers numerous objections that have been raised against it. These include an insistence that everything must be actual; paradoxes akin to those that confront naive set theory; arguments that modal realism leads to inductive scepticism, or do disregard for prudence and morality; and finally, sheer incredulity at a theory that disagrees so strongly with common opinion. Lewis grants the weight of the last objection, but argues that it is outweighed by the benefits to systematic theory that acceptance of modal realism brings. He asks whether these same benefits might be gained more cheaply if we replaced his many worlds by many merely "abstract" representations, but ultimately concludes that all versions of this "ersatz modal realism" are in serious trouble. In the final chapter, Lewis distinguishes among various questions regarding trans-world identity, and argues that his "method of counterparts" is preferable to alternative approaches.
Abstract Imagists - Abstract Imagists is a term derived from a 1961 exhibition in the Guggenheim Museum, New York called American Abstract Expressionists and Imagists - it refers to those who have largely non-gestural impersonal works of Abstract expressionists. A signature of the style is large areas of paint - as opposed to a more vigorous engagement by the artist. Frontier Thesis - The Frontier Thesis or Turner Thesis is the conclusion of Frederick Jackson Turner that the wellsprings of American exceptionalism and vitality have always been the American frontier, the region between urbanized, civilized society and the untamed wilderness. In the thesis, the frontier was seen as a region that created freedom, "breaking the bonds of custom, offering new experiences, [and] calling out new institutions and activities. Church–Turing thesis - In computability theory the Church–Turing thesis, Church's thesis, Church's conjecture or Turing's thesis, named after Alonzo Church and Alan Turing, is a hypothesis about the nature of mechanical calculation devices, such as electronic computers. Abstract Machine Notation - Abstract Machine Notation (AMN) is a specification language and (abstract) programming language for specifying abstract machines in the B-Method, based on the mathematical theory of Generalised Substitutions.
