The Yale Dictionary of Art and Artists by Erika Langmuir, The Yale Dictionary of Art and Artists is a superb reference work dealing with all aspects of Western art from 1300 to the present day. It provides information on painters, sculptors, and graphic artists, technical processes, terminology, theory, schools, movements, patrons and collecting, and much more. There are also extended conceptual entries ranging over such subjects as abstraction, allegory, genres, iconography, illusionism, minimalism, realism, and symbolism. Written by Erika Langmuir and Norbert Lynton, the 3,000 entries are unusually readable and lucid, providing vivid characterizations of artistic styles and artists. Entries vary between short and encyclopedic; major artists and artists whose careers or talents have recently been reassessed or who seem to merit reassessment are given a fuller treatment. There is extensive cross-referencing between entries.
Abstract art - Abstract art is now generally understood to mean art that does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead uses shapes and colours in a non-representational or subjective way. In the very early 20th century, the term was more often used to describe art, such as Cubist and Futurist art, that depicts real forms in a simplified or rather reduced way - keeping only an allusion of the original natural subject. Geometric abstract art - Geometric abstract art is a form of abstract art based on the use of simple geometric forms placed in nonillusionistic space and combined into nonobjective compositions. Abstract expressionism - Abstract Expressionism was an American post-World War II art movement. It was the first specifically American movement to achieve worldwide influence and also the one that put New York City at the center of the art world, a role formerly filled by Paris. Art gallery theorem - The art gallery theorem (sometimes called Chvátal's art gallery theorem, after Václav Chvátal) states that in an art gallery with n different corners, there needs to be at most \lfloor n/3 \rfloor (see floor function) watchmen positioned in the corners to watch over the entire gallery.
